Len Brown now needs to own up to infringement and pay

“The Mayor knows darn well Auckland Transport can’t fine him because they only have photographic, not firsthand, evidence of his latest parking infringement. However he now needs to urgently address this for the sake of the council’s own integrity,” says Auckland Councillor for Orakei Cameron Brewer in response to Len Brown still refusing to own up to his mayoral car illegally parking in a loading zone in Newmarket in August.

“No doubt as a lawyer he’s very pleased with himself for getting away with this latest infringement because he’s found a loophole he can sneak through. He knows only too well that in this case Auckland Transport can’t act on a photograph taken by a member of the public even though they’ve received and reviewed it. But as the Mayor of Auckland, Mr Brown now needs to do the right thing and pay the penalty regardless.

“To claim he wants to be treated like everyone else is a complete cop out, because he knows Auckland Transport can’t book him so he’s effectively got off on a technicality. The Mayor now needs to front up with his cash and amend his ways – and that’s his cash, not the mayoral office petty cash.

“Newmarket is a bustling business centre with loading zones an absolute premium. The arrogance of the Mayor parking on one may not be surprising to some but nonetheless it is completely unacceptable and he now needs to pay the price. That is the right and only thing to do,” says Cameron Brewer.
