President of the Senate of Australia visits New Zealand

President of the Senate of Australia visits New Zealand

The President of the Australian Senate, Hon Stephen Parry, is visiting the New Zealand Parliament this week.

As President of the Australian Senate, Hon Stephen Parry is interested in learning about parliamentary procedure in New Zealand, particularly Question Time. Part of this visit will also focus on how New Zealand and Australia can work together to support development of Pacific Island parliaments. As a former police officer, the President also has an interest in policing, security, and counter-terrorism issues, which will also form part of the programme.

The Speaker, Rt Hon David Carter, will be welcoming the President on behalf of the New Zealand Parliament.

“I look forward to welcoming the President to New Zealand and hope that his visit will be very beneficial for both of our Parliaments. This visit will give the President and I an opportunity to discuss a number of issues relating to both our Parliaments, including how we can continue to work together to build capability in Pacific Island parliaments.”

During the President’s visit he will be meeting with the Speaker, our Parliament’s other presiding officers, the Business Committee, the Law and Order Committee, and other members of Parliament.

As part of building inter-parliamentary relations, the Hon Stephen Parry will also be meeting with the New Zealand-Australia Friendship Group here in New Zealand.

Along with the visit to the New Zealand Parliament, the President will also visit the Royal New Zealand Police College, and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The President will be visiting the New Zealand Parliament from Tuesday to Wednesday 22-23 September.
