Couple’s cannabis operation goes up in smoke

A Gisborne couple aged between 38 and 48 years have been arrested for importing cannabis seeds and running dual cannabis-growing operations in their homes.

An investigation commenced after Customs officers at the International Mail Centre intercepted a package containing 630 cannabis seeds being sent to a Gisborne address.

Local police were informed and carried out a search warrant at the residence. A man was arrested after a ‘cannabis-grow’ was located inside his home. A search warrant at his female associate’s house found a similar cannabis-growing operation there.

Customs Investigations Manager Maurice O’Brien says these arrests serve as a warning to criminals who think they can avoid detection on the assumption that Customs will treat cannabis seed imports as a low priority.

“Customs and Police work closely together and share a commitment to combat any illegal drug activity that harms our communities. Offenders should not think they are beyond the law – they will get caught.”
