Union welcomes prosecution in the Masala case
The guilty plea from two managers of the popular Indian restaurant chain Masala will act as a warning to other
unscrupulous managers, says Union Network of Migrants (UNEMIG) co-ordinator Dennis Maga.
“UNEMIG commends the Labour Inspectorate’s work in bringing charges against the two managers. This is a warning for
other unscrupulous employers.”
“In May the government strengthened penalties for those who exploit migrant workers, the courts now have the power to
deport guilty employers holding residence visas,” says Maga.
“This case has the potential to act as a test case for the new penalties.”
“Exploitation of migrant workers is a growing problem in New Zealand. It is now important to ensure there is ongoing
monitoring. Migrant workers who come to contribute to New Zealand must be welcomed, not exploited,” says Maga.
