Open letter to the New Zealand government on refugee sector task-force and increase intake
(Wellington, NZ) – Wellington-based charity ChangeMakers Refugee Forum (CRF), with supporting sector organisations, has
written an open letter to the New Zealand government calling for the immediate establishment of a task-force in response
to the on-going refugee crisis.
CRF’s stance aligns with its fundamental vision: to see people of refugee background fully participate in the New
Zealand way of life. The organisation believes we do more, but that we must do it well. As a charity that focuses on
community development, research and advocacy, with long-term support provided to those who resettle in New Zealand,
there is a need for better dialogue and responsiveness within the refugee sector.
Tayyaba Khan, CEO of CRF said:
“It is great to see such spirit from every day New Zealanders caring about the refugee crisis. We as New Zealanders have
an obligation to ensure that people seeking protection are provided not only the immediate but also long-term support
that they require. This can only happen with the wider sector coming together. We can support the government to do this
job better, but we need to be invited to the table, and now.”
