Change the NZ Flag: New Flag Copyright Clarified
While there are huge benefits to New Zealand and Kiwis from having a distinctive flag of our own, some are questioning what the three designers of the alternative flags stand to gain.
"The terms and conditions of the submission of designs to the flag consideration panel are clear. The designers no longer have copyright over their designs, by being shortlisted the copyright to the designs is now assigned to the Crown" said Lewis Holden, campaign chair of Change the NZ Flag.
"While they may make and sell copies of their designs, anyone else is free to make copies so long as they respect the design. The same rules that apply to the current flag."
"The suggestion that the three designers stand to substantially gain financially from their design being chosen as the new New Zealand flag is nonsense. They received no payment for their designs, or any ongoing compensation. The Government - and therefore the people of New Zealand - now own these designs" concluded Mr Holden.
