Porirua Mayor says take more refugees
Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett is right behind New Zealand’s other Mayors in calling on Prime Minister John Key to double the quota for refugees.
“When children are dying on the beach and we have space here – why wouldn’t we take in more,” Mayor Nick says.
“We’re not saying open the floodgates but New Zealand can step up and do more. Many Porirua residents come from far and wide and understand the ordeal these people are facing.”
Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown is coordinating a signed letter from Mayors around the country asking the Government to double the refugee quota from 750 to 1500 over the next five years.
