NZ government launches a new scheme to review e-waste management programs in the country

Inspired by Australia’s National Computer and Television Recycling Scheme, the government in New Zealand is considering introducing a similar scheme, according to chief executive of the Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform, Carmel Dollison.

According to Ms Dollison the NZ government had commissioned a review, participated by Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform ANZRP, to take note of recent developments in their e-waste stream, which will help to identify the priority products for recycling. The review outcomes would help the government to make informed decision on various parameters of the e-waste management program such as type of product stewardship program, the nature of funding such as through a levy on purchases; type of scheme whether it is co-regulatory or a voluntary scheme.

According to Ms Dollison, “The recommendations have gone to the ministry and they will hopefully come through with a program soon,” Meanwhile there are many leading global manufacturers such as Fuji Xerox, Dell, Apple and HP, which is the only participant of the NZ government-accredited IT product stewardship scheme. The Zero Landfill scheme from Fuji Xerox got formal accreditation recently in the month of July.

According to NZ Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith said, “The Zero Landfill scheme from Fuji Xerox is a great example of how forward-thinking businesses can manage and mitigate their impact through proactive product stewardship,”

He further adds, “Fuji Xerox’s initiative is the second e-waste initiative to receive accreditation, and demonstrates that it is possible for global electronic corporates to voluntarily take responsibility for the impacts of their products in a way that provides benefits for the environment, and also stacks up commercially”
