Pay Equity Coalition supports Midwives
The Pay Equity Challenge Coalition today added its support to the College of Midwives claim of pay discrimination on the basis of gender.
“The fundamental principle to uphold is that of equal pay for work of equal value and we therefore give our full support,” says Coalition spokesperson, Angela McLeod.
“The rates of pay in this health workforce have gone down as the workforce has become more female dominated. That is a gender issue.
“There is a momentum established now that women in the workforce must be paid for the valued work they do and that needs to be addressed by political will.
“The government needs to get serious about women’s pay and take action to ensure that women are paid equitably. All workers should be paid fairly for the job and in this case, that midwives are paid for skills, training responsibility and effort required in the critical job they do.
“The Pay Equity Challenge Coalition wishes the College of Midwives all the best and are keen to work with them on this issue in which we have a deep shared interest” , says McLeod.
