CTU supports RMTU Action
The Council of Trade Unions (CTU) supports the action led by the Rail and Maritime Union (RMTU) in a hearing with the Employment Relations Authority today.
“The specifics of the legal case are detailed and complex. But we know that the Governments decision, to stop trains being made in New Zealand, was a crucial change. From that decision forward, many more bad decisions were made,” CTU Secretary, Sam Huggard said.
“New Zealand taxpayers have paid for the importation of trains laced with potentially cancer causing asbestos. This would never have happened if the trains had been constructed here.”
“The Government closed workshops like Hillside and is refusing to invest in sites like the Hutt Workshops. Yet favouring foreign suppliers has ended up costing the taxpayer more than local suppliers ever did.”
“The Government’s procurement policy is a disaster for New Zealand's working people, businesses and the taxpayer.”
“The union movement has been briefed on this case and is watching with interest,” said Huggard.
