Is Electronic Monitoring Fool Proof Or Run by Fools?
20 August 2015
The Sensible Sentencing Trust says that Electronic Monitoring is putting public safety in jeopardy and is calling for a
complete review of the system.
The Youth Advocate for SST, Jess McVicar said, “In recent months there seems to have been an increase in criminals
subjected to electronic monitoring cutting off their bracelets and making a run for it. One recently having been off the
radar for 30 hours before it was reported he was missing!”
“We have to ask ourselves how the system is failing so spectacularly and how much of a risk is our community and
children at and the most importantly, what is the Department of Corrections doing to fix this problem.”
“Last night it was reported that only 5, yes "only" 5 people were currently unaccounted for by cutting their bracelet but today that figure has more than trebled with it
now confirmed there are 18 dangerous criminals roaming our streets totally free to do what they want, when they want and
at their leisure.”
Jess said some serious questions need to be asked about how the Electronic Monitoring system has become so chaotic and
dysfunctional.
“How is it that these criminals who are generally repeat offenders managed to get away with this and then for
Corrections to not even know the correct number?”
“It has to be one of two things, either the system is unworkable or the Department of Corrections is incompetent?”
“Whose fault is it that this keeps happening and who will take responsibility for not only risking the community but for
not doing their jobs properly because surely 18 criminals on the run is a sign that the current system is just NOT
working.” ENDS
