Most Kiwis still willing to work overseas
Despite strong domestic job opportunities New Zealand’s workforce remains globally-mobile, with 88 per cent of current jobseekers admitting they would consider leaving home to work overseas.
In the poll of 570 New Zealanders by recruiting experts Hays, 74 per cent would consider leaving for better job opportunities, career development or exposure, while 14 per cent would consider leaving for lifestyle factors. Just 12 per cent would not consider leaving New Zealand to work overseas.
“The opportunity to gain highly valued international experience is still the number one factor driving local talent overseas,” says Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand.
“That’s despite our strong domestic economy, busy residential housing market and next phase of the Christchurch rebuild – which together are fuelling a resilient and active recruitment market.
“With vacancy activity positive and hiring intentions strong, the shortage of high-skill candidates is becoming more acute, so we cannot afford to lose our skilled talent to overseas markets – many of which are not performing as strongly as our own economy.
“But the lure of an overseas adventure, higher wages and a faster career path can be hard to beat, and from a candidate’s perspective gaining international experience and an international mindset can aid their long-term career development and advancement,” he said.
Earlier this year Hays released its New Zealand Returners Report, which looks at what will attract skilled Kiwis home. It is based on discussions with 635 New Zealand nationals or residents who are either studying or working overseas, but thinking about coming back to New Zealand for their next career step. It addresses the motivations and salary expectations of returners, the type of organisation and industry they want to work for, and the advantage of their overseas experience.
