Forum welcomes report on H&S Bill

24th July 2015

It is encouraging to see that the revised the Health and Safety Reform Bill still includes clear requirements for employers to involve their workers in health and safety, the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum says.

“Workers often understand the risks in a business better than anyone, so involving them in managing those risks is just good business practice,” says Forum Executive Director Francois Barton.

“The revised Bill strikes a pragmatic balance between the need to involve workers and to provide flexibility for small businesses on how to do this,” Francois says.

The revised Bill was reported back by the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee today.

“I’m pleased to see that the Bill still sends a strong message that businesses need to manage the risks they create, and keep everyone who works for them – employees and contractors – safe from harm.

“There is also still a strong signal that the buck stops with senior leaders because they have an enormous ability to influence health and safety in their workplaces.”

Francois says the Bill is an important milestone.

“But it is imperative that the government maintains momentum and ensures this legislation is backed up by good regulations and practical guidance material for business.”
