Stop picking on the Asian population
New Zealand Association for Migration and Investment (NZAMI) says New Zealand needs investment monies and it is the way
this investment is managed that is at fault rather than Asian people.
“The housing dilemma faced by Auckland is due to very short term planning on population growth and infrastructure needs
by successive governments and councils,” explains NZAMI chair June Ranson.
“As a first step, we need to gather reliable data to inform policy choices, not knee-jerk responses.”
NZAMI further suggests ensuring that investments clearly benefit New Zealand.
“Why not insist upon overseas investors building a new home instead of purchasing existing properties? This would result
in investment monies being used to build houses and to ease the current housing shortage in Auckland.
“From a migration perspective, this means that the migrant is building their own home to live in and this lowers the
impact on New Zealand resident home buyers.”
The association says government should not discourage overseas investment, but ensure it is targeted to create benefits
for the investor and for New Zealand.
