Young Labour PR: Unfair 90-day trials need to go
Young Labour has serious concerns about statements made by Labour Leader Andrew Little today about his newfound support for the National Government’s 90-day trial law.
“The 90-day trial law adversely affects young workers, and it is difficult to see how a law which is premised on an employers right to sack workers without cause, can be made fairer” said Young Labour President Katie Wilson
“In 2010 Joanne Bartlet was sacked by Burger Fuel on the 89th day of her trial period because she asked for her meal break entitlements. Andrew Little has not clarified how unfairness in the 90-day trial process will be addressed by making it a requirement for employers to provide feedback to the people they are firing.”
“Young Labour believes that in order to make the law fair, the 90-day trial must be repealed. We will not support a policy position that will continue to undermine the protections of working people.”
“Labour has worked tirelessly to protect the rights of people who work. Young Labour members are deeply concerned that our Party will cease to oppose the 90-day trial and all that it means for New Zealand workers.”
