Social Values launched in Aotearoa
New Zealand has joined the Social Values global network following the launch of Social Value Aotearoa (SVA).
The launch at the Holiday Inn, Mangere, South Auckland – the venue where less than 12 months ago Te Pou Matakana was
launched - marks a new way forward for government and non-government organisations.
The two organisations behind SVA is west Auckland Urban Māori Authority, Te Whānau O Waipareira, and the North Island
Whānau Ora Commissioning agency Te Pou Matakana.
“We as a whānau have never been afraid to adopt best practices, so long as it advances and benefits the communities we
serve,” Waipareira CEO John Tamihere says.
“The change in thinking by government and non-government organisations in the UK and Australia, shows us that this
approach is right for New Zealand.”
SVA will be the New Zealand voice in the global movement to value social outcomes. This progresses the conversation from
the cost of providing a service to one where added social value becomes part of the overall strategy when purchasing.
SVA Launch co-ordinator Jo Nicholson says a number of organisations have signed up to the network and is confident it
will provide benefits for entire communities.
“There is currently no New Zealand network where we can collaborate, share knowledge and build a New Zealand context,”
Nicholson says.
The launch establishes Social Value Aotearoa’s affiliation as the National Member Network (NMN) to the parent body,
Social Value International.
“An account of social value is a story from the perspective of the people affected by an organisation’s activity. The
core message being money isn’t everything,” Nicholson says.
Local and international representatives will speak at the launch, including founding CEO of Ganbina
Australia, Adrian Appo, renowned for the social impact his organisation creates and its ability to demonstrate that in
dollar values.
