Te Ata Tino Toa: Our vision for the 2020 Olympics

Te Ata Tino Toa: Our vision for the 2020 Olympics

Te Ata Tino Toa Dual Flag Policy

Te Ata Tino Toa recommends that when a NZ flag is decided upon by the NZ population, that in public institutions it fly alongside the official Maori flag.
We call this our dual flag policy. This policy is based on the principle of partnership in the Treaty of Waitangi and enshrined in the NZ coat of arms.
What does this mean?
For example, at the Olympics:
- Before the Olympic games, Aotearoa NZ selects two flag bearers.

- The two flag bearers walk side by side at the Olympics opening ceremony.

- Gold medal winners will select the flag that they would like to fly at the medal ceremony – the Maori flag, or the NZ flag. The IOC guidelines allow ‘athletes to march behind the flag of their country.’ Te Ata Tino Toa proposes that the two flag bearers march side by side, or that NZ alternates between the two flags at each Olympics opening ceremony.
