Fix Our Future campaign to engage Kiwis on climate
consultation
Sunday 17 May 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
Youth climate change movement Generation Zero
today launched an online submission tool for Kiwis to make
their voices heard in the Government’s consultation on New
Zealand’s climate change commitments.
The Fix Our
Future website (www.fixourfuture.nz) allows people
to make a personalised submission by selecting from six key
points written by Generation Zero and adding their own
personal comments.
“Kiwis have their first chance in
six years to engage with the Government on what it’s doing
about climate change,” said Generation Zero spokesperson
Paul Young.
“The discussion document and
consultation questions the Government has produced are
narrow and leading. We want to make it easy for Kiwis to
call for what’s really needed to fix our
future.”
The Fix Our Future submission form calls on
the Government to:
• Act on climate change as an
investment in our future;
• Call for a global zero
carbon target and commit to a pathway towards zero carbon
dioxide emissions by 2050 or earlier (alongside reductions
in other greenhouse gases);
• Develop a credible action
plan to meet New Zealand’s targets;
• Establish a
climate law that holds the government accountable for
reducing emissions, and an independent Climate
Commission.
• Establish a cross-party climate working
group and an ongoing programme to engage with New Zealanders
on climate change solutions.
• Make meaningful
policy changes that will start cutting New Zealand’s
emissions during this term of government.
“These
six points are the basics of what is needed for responsible
action on climate change,” said Mr Young.
“As
young New Zealanders we’re really concerned about the
future we’re inheriting and we’re tired of hearing
excuses from our leaders for delay and
inaction.”
“The World Bank, the OECD and global
business leaders are calling for governments to plan for a
zero carbon future without delay. Why are our leaders not
listening?”
“We have the tools to get on with
building a zero carbon future today - let’s use
them.”
“We encourage Kiwis of all ages who care
about our collective future to use our submission form to
tell the Government what they want to
see.”
