E-cig ads will fall on disappointed lungs
The new ecig ads on Auckland's Rock FM will fall on disappointed lungs, says the Chair of End Smoking NZ Associate
Professor Marewa Glover. NZ law prohibits the sale of nicotine for electronic cigarettes.
"Some of the newer electronic vaping products with nicotine can help people to stop smoking", she said. "But without
nicotine and without guidance as to which products are effective for quitting NZ smokers will be left out in the cold
smoking tobacco."
End Smoking NZ wants the Government to regulate so smokers can have access to electronic nicotine delivery devices for
quitting. Regulation also needs to require labelling of the products, child-proof caps on the liquids and prohibit
advertising that by association glamorises or promotes smoking.
Another problem example are leaflets dropped in letterboxes advertising electronic water pipes but also water pipes for
smoking.
End Smoking NZ board members include Dr George Laking, an oncologist, Professor Chris Bullen who has conducted research
into ecigs for quitting, Dr Penny Truman an ESR scientist; associated members Trish Fraser of Global Public Health is an
ex-Director of ASH and Dr Murray Laugesen is the grandfather of tobacco control in New Zealand. Associate Professor
Glover is a Māori health researcher with Massey University's College of Health.
