SDHB decision a “kick in the shins” and legal action may be taken
The union representing Southland District Health Board (SDHB) food workers is appalled by the SDHB’s decision to outsource the production of meals on wheels and hospital meals to Compass Group, and is considering taking legal action.
The announcement was made to members today after a board meeting this morning packed with union members, community organisers, local business people and other members of the community that have staunchly opposed the proposal since day one.
Service and Food Workers Union (SFWU) organiser Anna Huffstutler said that today’s decision ignored the wishes of the community and would not necessarily lead to significant savings.
“The SDHB have decided to take jobs away from our community, take contracts away from our local businesses and take fresh food options away from patients,” Ms Huffstutler said.
“All in the name of estimated long terms savings, for which the business case is anything but clear,” she said.
“We are now considering our legal options. It’s not over yet.”
Nicole Clarke, Kitchen Assistant at Southland Hospital said that the decision was a “kick in the shins” for the workers and the community.
“I’m absolutely gutted. We’re now looking at job losses for around 20% of us. We work extremely hard for the SDHB. We know the ins and outs of our kitchen, we know what works,” Ms Clarke said.
“Not only am I worried about our jobs, I am really worried about the drop in the quality of service that this move could bring,” she said.
Ms Clarke added that Compass must come clean on their staffing roster before the SDHB sign a service contract with them.
The proposal to outsource the food production has been criticised by a wide range of community leaders, including Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt.
