Support grows for Kiwi Head of State – latest poll

A new poll reveals that support for a New Zealand Head of State has overtaken support for a British Monarch, says New Zealand Republic spokesperson Dean Knight.

Support for a New Zealand Head of State grows to 47 percent in this year's poll while support for the monarchy drops to 46 percent, the first time support for a New Zealand Head of State has overtaken support for the monarchy.

“We are pleased with the result. Despite ongoing PR efforts from Buckingham Palace, more and more New Zealanders support a local head of state”.

“The long term trend is clear as more and more New Zealanders came around to the case for a local head of state” says Knight

“New Zealand needs its own independent head of state. Our blueprint cuts formal ties with the British Royals and grows the office of the Governor-General into a democratically selected and truly Kiwi role.”

“A New Zealand head of state best reflects where we are as a country and a people. We need our system and our symbols to reflect who we are today and can be tomorrow, not who we were in days gone by” says Knight.

The poll of 1000 people was conducted by landline between April 6 and April 21st. It has a Margin or Error of +/- 3.2%, at the 95% confidence level
