Callous government prepares to asset strip state housing in Tamaki

The government decision to hand over 2,800 state houses in Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure to the Tamaki Redevelopment Company is asset-stripping state housing and will result in greater struggle for low-income tenants and families.

“This is a nasty slap in the face for state house tenants in Tamaki and across the country who will face further hardship delivered by a callous National government”.

If this proposal is enacted the number of state houses in Tamaki would dramatically drop with thousands of tenants and families forced out of income-related rental homes provided through state housing.

Housing Minister Nick Smith claims the families driven out of state houses will have homes available through social housing providers but will have to wait for a “financial vacancy” as well before being able to receive the Income Related Rental Subsidy as the IRRS will be capped.

Across the world only governments have the resources and capacity to provide quality affordable housing for families and tenants on low incomes.

SHAN will fight this proposal because it’s the blueprint for how National will dispose of its entire state housing stock. We are already active in the Tamaki area and we will be working to mobilise the community to fight these plans.

The National government are moving the country quickly back towards Victorian England where there was no state assistance in housing – just charities and churches to provide food and housing for the needy.

It’s unacceptable and we will fight it every step of the way.
