Springhill Prisoners Petition for a stop to cruel and inhumane conditions
Early this week the Howard League received a petition from prisoners at Springhill. These prisoners are all low security and were moved from Rangipo prison, to a high security unit at Springhill prison, without any notice, in the middle of February.
At Rangipo they had fair and reasonable unlock hours which gave them exposure to sunlight and exercise. They were pursuing many avenues of rehabilitation and working on their education, art and spiritual progress.
This has all stopped as they are now subject to excessive inhumane lock up hours. Up to 19 hours a day. They are despairing. They ask for the public to be made aware.
