“Winston Peters is once again seeking to bring politics into the gutter with more cheap attacks on immigrants,” says
Affordable Auckland Mayoral candidate Stephen Berry. “By resorting to xenophobia to pick up votes he completely misses
the real problems which are keeping home ownership out of reach of young families in Auckland.”
Stephen Berry says hyperinflation in the Auckland housing market is an issue of supply and Auckland Council has a lot of
responsibility for it. “The Metropolitan Urban Limit needs to be abolished to make more land available for residential
housing. Consenting processes need to be streamlined and planning practises less restrictive so intensification becomes
easier in places where it is appropriate.
“Immigration is a positive thing in a small country with low unemployment and strong economic growth. The people who are
settling in New Zealand bring skills and expertise which are positive for our economy. Mr. Peters should be condemned
for again resorting to redneck ignorance to shore up his voter base.”
In the press release issued today, Winston Peters says the problems in Auckland will go on to affect other parts of the
country too. “Already Aucklanders are cashing up and moving elsewhere with their home sale profits – as they spend in
other towns, up the prices will go.”
“Is this the same Winston Peters who said during the Northland by-election that he wants more investment in the
regions?”
