The 2015 National Peace Workshops 'Remembering war / ending war: Challenging militarism and building peace', will be held in Wellington onSaturday, 18 and Sunday, 19 April 2015, organised by Peace Movement Aotearoa in conjunction with hosts St Andrew's on the Terrace.
The programme includes an interesting and participatory mix of speaker and presentation plenary sessions, workshops, a 'Poets for Peace' evening, stalls with peace resources, and more.
The peace workshops open on Saturday morning with two presentations: 'Remembering WW1 in the context of ongoing militarism' by Edwina Hughes, Peace Movement Aotearoa; and 'Challenging militarism and building peace in the Pacific', by Dr Pala Molisa, Lecturer, Victoria University. Workshops on Saturday afternoon include the opportunity to learn about compassionate nonviolent communication; how to write a peace poem; a discussion on men, masculinity and militarism; and ukuleles for peace.
'Poets for Peace' is on Saturday night, an evening of poetry featuring * Teresia Teaiwa * Maria MacMillan * Janis Freegard * Sophia Tara * Ali Jacs * Martin de Jong * Meg Hartfield * Vivienne Plumb * Tim Jones * Madeleine Slavik * and more, with a musical interlude by Mighty Ukes for Peace.
There are two sessions on Sunday afternoon: 'Churches challenging militarism and building peace', with panelists from churches including Quakers, and church social justice organisations; followed by the closing session 'Make peace not war' with reflections by weekend speakers, panelists and participants.
