Insurance Council Signs UN Statement on Disaster Resilience
The Insurance Council of New Zealand has signed the United Nations Statement in support of disaster risk reduction released at the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster and Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan.
“The conference adopts a new global framework to help governments at all levels better prepare for disaster risk and to improve the resilience of nations and communities to disasters and includes the private sector for the first time,” ICNZ Chief Executive Tim Grafton said.
“We know strong public-private partnerships reduce risks. Consistent with this, the Insurance Council’s position paper “Better Protecting New Zealand from Natural Hazards”, which outlines a 15-point plan for risk reduction, contributes to how this can be achieved,” he said.
The Insurance Council has been a supporting institution of the UN’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance since 2012.
Sustainable insurance aims to reduce risk, develop innovative solutions, improve business performance, and contribute to environmental, social and economic sustainability.
