Plain Packaging - Māori Party are congratulated

Te Ara Hā Ora the National Māori Tobacco Control service congratulate the Māori party for their public support of plain packaging. Zoe Hawke the Manager of the service states that “Hon Tariana Turia was the champion of a smokefree 2025 goal and now the new party leaders are continuing her work, this is commendable”

“Measures like plain packaging that will decrease the uptake of smoking for our future generations will also bring massive economic benefits for New Zealand. Smoking causes death and disease that tax payers end up covering in health care costs. “There are both health and economic benefits to implementing preventative tobacco harm measures”.

Te Ara Hā Ora are also interested in other initiatives that will support the removal of tobacco from all our communities so that we can reclaim what we were originally – a Tupeka Kore Aotearoa or a “tobacco free New Zealand”. “We have a clean, green and nuclear free image that we promote, a tobacco free country would complement this image” states Zoe Hawke.
