Predator Free New Zealand excited by new investment

Predator Free NZ is excited about the announcement today that Fonterra, and other dairy companies, will invest $5 million in Zero Invasive Predators, or ZIP. This investment in predator control technologies by one of New Zealand’s biggest companies shows the importance of this issue to New Zealand.

PFNZ recognise that to achieve the audacious goal of a predator free New Zealand we will need significant advances in our current suite of tools and understanding of predator behaviour. ZIP have been established to develop innovative tools and processes to enable large areas of our mainland to become predator free. Hopefully this investment will significantly accelerate ZIP’s research and development program.

Rob Fenwick, founder and board member of PFNZ says “This is an exciting time for predator control in NZ. There are a number of new technologies at various stages of development that we hope will allow a step change in the way we manage predators in NZ. If ZIP can be successful in preventing the re-invasion of predators in a cleared area this will be a huge step forward.”

Fonterra's backing of this vision is a demonstration of what many New Zealanders hold to be true - that we must protect our national species and ensure our grandchildren can see them in the wild.
