Te Kauhanganui Triennial Elections Held
The governing body of Waikato-Tainui, Te Kauhanganui, has today held triennial elections to appoint officers for the 2015-2017 term.
Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai of Mookai Kainga Marae has been returned as Chairman for a second term. She was re-elected unopposed. Te Whakahawea Rapana of Waahi Paa has been re-elected Deputy Chairman and Glenn Tootill of Mookai Kainga Marae was elected unopposed as Secretary.
“It is an honour and a privilege to serve as Chair. The previous term has seen the members of Te Kauhanganui commit to providing stable, effective governance that will drive our iwi forward. I look forward to working with the House over this next term to consolidate our progress and provide kaitiakitanga over the affairs of the tribe for the benefit of our people,” said Ms Moana-Tuwhangai.
Te Arataura o Waikato-Tainui
Elections were also held to appoint members of Te Arataura, which is the executive committee of Te Kauhanganui. Returning members for the 2015-2017 term are:
Edward Hoki-mai Chong (Rereteewhioi Marae)
Tipa Mahuta (Waahi Paa)
Rahui Papa (Poohara Marae)
Hemi Rau (Te Kotahitanga Marae)
Paki Rawiri (Te Awamaarahi Marae)
Tom Roa (Puurekireki Marae)
Rukumoana Schaafhausen (Rukumoana Marae)
Turangawaewae Marae Tukere (Turangawaewae Marae)
Newly elected members of Te Arataura are:
Patience Te Ao (Tauranganui Marae)
Tahi o Hurae Rangiawha (Mootakotako Marae)
Officers for Te Arataura will be appointed at its first meeting later this month.
Long-serving members Kiingi Porima (Waipapa Marae) and Sonny Wilson (Hukanui Marae) retired from Te Arataura on completion of the 2012-2014 term.
Negotiator
Tom Roa has been re-confirmed as Negotiator, a role with responsibility for leading the settlement of outstanding claims on behalf of Waikato-Tainui.
