BP Scam warning - SMS and Online Message Scams
We have
received reports of New Zealanders receiving SMS and online
messages from scammers claiming to be from BP.
One of
the online messages falsely suggests that recipients have
won BP Gift Cards in a BP competition, and asks recipients
to download "House of Fun" software. One of the SMS
messages sent from the number 8222 falsely suggests that
recipients have won a BP voucher, and asks recipients to
visit a website to claim the prize.
These messages are scams and are not related to BP in any way. BP has reported these scams to Consumer Affairs and the Department of Internal Affairs.
BP advises that it does not send SMS or email messages to customers requesting that they click on links to claim prizes.
If you have received one of these or similar scam messages, BP recommends that you do not reply to the messages. BP also warns against downloading any software or visiting any websites referred to in the messages, as this could install malicious software on your electronic device.
If you have received
similar scam messages, you may wish to report it to
Consumer Affairs and/or the Department of Internal Affairs.
Information about scams is also available on the Consumer Affairs and
Department of Internal Affairs
websites.
