Auckland Council Blocking Democracy

Auckland Council has blocked thousands of emails sent to Councillors and Local Board Members by members of the public supporting Democracy Action’s campaign against the ‘cultural impact assessment’ provisions in the Unitary Plan.

Democracy Action Chairman, Lee Short, says: “Auckland Council appear to be shutting out the voices they claim to represent and preventing residents from contacting their local councillor. This filtering is completely contrary to the democratic accountability and the fact it is continuing after we expressed our concerns is a snub to the citizens of Auckland.”

“More than 900 Aucklanders have used our emailing tool to express their concern to their elected representatives. But it looks as though Auckland Council didn’t want Auckland’s 171 elected representatives to know.”

"We’ve written to elected officials expressing our concerns that the Council's email servers are continuing to filter emails from our members regarding the controversial Mana Whenua provisions. We want Len Brown to give us the answers officials haven’t as to why the emails were never delivered."
