Submissions called for two herbicide applications
Submissions called for two herbicide applications
The Environmental Protection Authority is calling for submissions on the reassessment of the herbicide Firebird and an application for release of the herbicide Sakura.
Firebird is a selective herbicide containing flufenacet plus diflufenican first assessed and approved in 2009. One of the controls applied to the approval was to restrict application of the herbicide primarily to manage risks of adverse effects to the environment. The applicant Bayer New Zealand Limited is now applying to the EPA to increase the maximum application rate.
The second application also from Bayer is for Sakura a herbicide containing pyroxasulfone for use against various weeds in wheat. This is the first application received by the EPA containing this active ingredient.

The public are invited to make submissions on the application to the EPA. The submissions period for both applications opens Tuesday 25 November and will close at 5pm on 2 February 2015.
Submissions are an opportunity to provide further information and raise issues concerning the application. They will inform a decision-making committee that will decide whether to approve the application.
A public hearing may be held before a decision is made. The EPA will provide at least 10 working days’ notice of the hearing date, time and place. We'll provide this information to all submitters and the applicant.
The EPA’s role is to oversee applications under the HSNO Act to import and manufacture hazardous substances. We put controls in place to manage the risks of hazardous substances to safeguard people and the environment.
