Democracy Action Welcomes Tauranga Vote
Responding to Tauranga Council’s unanimous vote not to establish separate Council seats on the basis of ethnicity, Lee Short, Democracy Action founder says:
“The establishment of a Maori ward would have damaged the relationship between Maori and non-Maori.”
“The trend of councils and other groups trying to impose race-based wards and representatives upon communities runs contrary to the rights and freedoms New Zealanders hold dear.”
“One only needs to look to Auckland to see how the Council’s policies and priorities are influenced by unelected and unaccountable race-based representatives. We welcome Tauranga not following the path of Auckland.”
