Launch of Hui E! Community Aotearoa

A new national umbrella for the community sector is now a reality.

Hui E! Community Aotearoa has evolved, following extensive consultation by its founding partners ANGOA (the Association of NGOs of Aotearoa) and Social Development Partners. Its creation has been supported by the broader community sector.

Hui E! Community Aotearoa is here for tangata whenua organisations and the broad voluntary and community sector, charities, incorporated societies, Trusts, and informal community groups.

The name Hui E! derives from part of the longer saying often used in oratory—Whano, whano! Haramai te toki! Haumi ē! Hui ē! Tāiki ē! It is used to signal that the group is united and ready to embrace its core purpose as a forum for the sector.

Hui E! Community Aotearoa has three core functions:

• Hui – being a forum for the community sector

• Awhina – practical support for the community sector

• Kōrero – a public voice for the community sector

Simon Cayley, Chair of Hui E! says that through working together we can be strong and effective in our work which is to the benefit of every New Zealander.

"We think that a strong community sector and vigorous civil engagement in society ensures a strong base to a nation. We want Hui E! to foster ideas, discussion and debate as well as encourage the sparking of innovations and collaboration for the good of the community sector."

“Hui E! Community Aotearoa is the signal of a new beginning, a crystalising of a vision to bring partnership, diversity, social justice, creativity and connectivity together as one”, says Kaye Maree Dunn, Social Innovator.

“With our eye to the future we see that Māori, Pasifika, ethnic, youth, health and disability groups and minority communities can also find their place within the organisation. So they too can benefit from the networks and collective intelligence.”

"In addition to Simon Cayley as the inaugural Chair of Hui E!, we are delighted to have the commitment of a group of recognised leaders from the community sector to act as the inaugural Trustees. They are Sonya Rimene as Deputy Chair, Marion Blake, Julie Haggie, Bronwyn Yates and Pat Watson."

"We look forward to you sharing in our excitement of building on an already strong and vibrant community sector," says Cayley.
