NZ Infrastructure leaders head to UK

More than 30 infrastructure leaders are on their way to the UK to explore best practice in integrating urban intensification and infrastructure.

The group will look at major projects in London and Manchester including Crossrail, High Speed 2, the 9 Elms Housing Development, and the Manchester Central Urban re-generation.

They will look at the planning, funding, delivery and outcomes of these projects while also exploring opportunities to foster trade partnerships. The UK has around $750 billion dollars of infrastructure development planned in the next 20 years.

The delegation will include representatives from Treasury, Auckland City Council, Beca, Fulton Hogan, Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, Ngai Tahu, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) and the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.

British High Commissioner to New Zealand Jonathan Sinclair says collaboration with partners is intrinsic to the way UK infrastructure firms work around the globe.

“There is a considerable amount of big project work underway in Britain. Much of it involves multiple agencies and a high level of inter-agency collaboration. The lessons we have learned could be of value to New Zealand - just as UK Councils and other bodies will learn from those visiting. A visit like this is about sharing experiences and working together where there are mutual benefits.”

It was also a good time to be visiting Britain as the economy was in strong recovery mode with the IMF forecasting growth of 3.2% for 2014 and 2.8% for 2015.

The idea for the NZ visit to the UK was announced during a major infrastructure meeting in Auckland recently where Sir John Armitt, Chairman of Britain’s Olympics Delivery Authority, shared the lessons learned from the successful and innovative delivery of the 2012 Olympics infrastructure projects.

The New Zealand Council for Infrastructure Development (NZCID) is leading the delegation which will be hosted by UK Trade & Investment.
