Age Concern welcomes Maggie Barry as new Minister for Senior Citizens
Age Concern New Zealand is pleased to welcome Maggie Barry as the new Minister for Senior Citizens and is pleased that this role is now inside cabinet.
Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive, Robyn Scott says she believes Ms Barry will be a great asset to older New Zealanders and the fact that the role is now inside cabinet means Ms Barry will have a greater power to influence and affect change.
“Maggie Barry has long been supportive of the needs of older New Zealanders, and has spoken at regional Age Concern meetings where she has demonstrated her understanding of elder abuse.”
“Earlier this year Ms Barry highlighted Elder Abuse Awareness Week by visiting several rest homes and social agencies in the Wanganui area.”
Mrs Scott says that Ms Barry’s already active role in the affairs of senior citizens is extremely promising. The Minister’s high profile will allow her to promote older New Zealanders as an asset and work with others to help change ageist attitudes within the work force, in the community and in the media.
