Andrew Little considering running for the Labour leadership.

Andrew Little considering running for the Labour leadership.

Labour MP Andrew Little has told TV One’s Q+A programme that he is considering running for the Labour leadership.

“..I've been prevailed upon by a large number of people to consider that, I've said I would do that, but in doing that I need to talk to quite a few people, family, caucus colleagues, and a number of other people. So yes I am considering it but I'm certainly nowhere near having made a decision about it.”

He says the party needs to examine why it failed to connect with voters but admits some of Labour’s policies were “too frightening” for some voters:

“My intuitive feel for this election and explanation for the result, is a combination of some big policies that meant significant changes for people, as well as confusion about coalition partners and so on, and a bit of scare campaigning about it, meant that we were too frightening a prospect for people. People retreated to security. What people most want, they want economic security, knowing that they're going to have a job, they're going to get reasonably paid for it, and a sense of physical security as well, and I think people when they came to us they heard you know superannuation policy, working an extra couple of years, they had capital gains tax on their little investment property, all that was kind of at risk, it was too scary.”

Q+A, 9-10am Sundays on TV ONE and one hour later on TV ONE plus 1. Repeated Sunday evening at 11:35pm. Streamed live at www.tvnz.co.nz
