New recruits to boost border protection

Twenty six new recruits began an intensive nine-week training course in Auckland today that will see them graduate as Customs officers in time for the busy summer season.

Comptroller of Customs, Carolyn Tremain welcomed the new recruits at a pōwhiri at Customs’ Air Cargo Inspections Facility in Auckland this morning where she affirmed the importance of the role they will play at the border.

“Our people have a crucial role in protecting New Zealand’s border and safeguarding our communities from major risks such as drugs or weapons smuggling and other serious crimes such as fraud, money laundering, and child exploitation.

“While maintaining the important focus on law enforcement, officers are also expected to deliver excellence in border operations and services. Our aim is to provide high assurance, with a light touch,” Ms Tremain said.

Passenger numbers increase in November and the new recruits will boost staff numbers at Auckland International Airport over the summer.

The cohort will spend their first two weeks in a residential training course, learning immigration theory and in practical sessions. They will spend the remainder of their training on the job at Auckland International Airport where they will gain a wide variety of skills.

“Customs work can be extremely challenging and complex, so it’s important that our trainees have a good understanding of the work and have the best possible practical training to prepare them for their new career,” says Ms Tremain.

The new officers will graduate on 28 November 2014, and be a welcome addition to the team at Auckland International Airport.
