Shearer Says Labour Needs to Get House in Order Before Deciding Leader

Ex Labour party leader and possible repeat contender David Shearer says the Labour Party is going about the post-election period in the wrong way.

“It pains me to look over the internet and see what’s happening at the moment,” Mr Shearer told TVNZ Q+A programme, referring to how the post-election jostling for leadership of the party was playing out.

“Let’s get some analysis done, let’s think it through coolly and carefully about where we need to go and what steps we need to take.. and then we go to leadership.. but not before.”

Mr Shearer was talking from New York, where he’s has been participating in U.N discussions about the Islamic State. He said almost every country addressing the U.N was very concerned about the spread of the Islamic State – and told our political interviewer Rachel Smalley that New Zealand wasn’t immune.

“We have a very assimilated, peace-loving and productive Muslim community within New Zealand, but it only needs a handful so we do need to be vigilant.”
