Dairy Strategy Proving to be a Disaster
The intensification of the dairy industry is proving to be a disaster, says SAFE. This comes after the forecast 2015 milk price payout was cut 12% by Fonterra this week.
“Last year, the government effectively gave the green light for the dairy industry to begin factory farming cows indoors, just like pigs and chickens,” says SAFE campaign officer Shanti Ahluwalia. “But this forecast cut shows that producing more milk using factory farms is not going to work.”
SAFE is concerned that this strategy will lead to an immense amount of suffering. Cows suffer from a number of health issues in factory farms, as well as restricted opportunity to display natural behaviours.
“It seems ridiculous to start factory farming cows indoors,” says Mr Ahluwalia. “The world is seriously starting to question factory farming, and New Zealand’s backward step will not go unnoticed. Causing more animals to suffer in factory farms is not the right direction.”
SAFE is calling on the government to demonstrate real vision for the animals and for New Zealand, by banning factory farming of dairy cows.
