Ric Odom CEO of Royal NZ SPCA has expressed concern over the toxic poison 1080 entering waterways, but DoC, Council’s and Ministry of Health have colluded to make it legal.

The extracts below legitimise the pathway from total restriction on 1080 in water to no restriction at all in NZ.

“Harmful to aquatic organisms. Manage bait application rates carefully and comply with any restrictions imposed on placing baits over or near waterways. Avoid pollution of any water supply with pellets or used container.”

Previous restrictions on application of 1080 to water in resource consents by West Coast Regional Council (WCRC).

New restrictions on resource consents

“The exclusion zones include rivers greater than 10 meters wide. This is the condition we just removed from our consent so it should not be hard to argue for it’s removal”

Tasman District Council’s Leif Pigott obliged by removing any reference to rivers of any size in the non-notified grant to poison 270,000 hectares of Kahurangi National Park.

Neil Silver of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board says

“With regards to rivers, any conditions imposed in the HSNO Officers Permission will be to mitigate risks to domestic (human) drinking water supplies only.”
