Stuart Nash voted against wishes of Napier Electorate – ASA decision
Napier Conservative Party Candidate Garth McVicar says the recent decision by the Advertising Standards Authority in
reply to a complaint laid by Stuart Nash’s campaign manager confirms that Nash voted against the wishes of the Napier
electorate.
Robert Johnson, Campaign Manager for Napier Labour candidate Stuart Nash lodged three complaints in response to a
pamphlet distributed by the Conservative Party. The ASA acknowledged that one complaint was in fact a genuine error and
the other two complaints were not upheld.
McVicar said one aspect of the complaint was Mr Nash’s stance on the anti-smacking law in which 90.1% of Napier voters
in the referendum on the issue voted against the proposed law. The ASA decision confirms that Mr Nash failed to take any
notice of the wishes of the people he supposedly he represents.
“In fact Stuart Nash deliberately and consciously voted against the wishes of the Napier people, Mr Nash says that
politics run in his family and it appears this is true. He tells us what we want to hear but when it really comes down
to it fails to deliver. That is certainly the true form of most politicians.”
“We felt it was important that the people of Napier know that the man wishing to represent them in Parliament in fact
refused to vote to amend the anti-smacking law when he had the opportunity. Over 90% of Napier voters voted against the
anti- smacking law in the referendum and yet Mr. Nash ignored them and chose to follow his party instead of representing
the voters of Napier.”
McVicar believes a local MP should put the wishes of the electorate they represent first, “I have already told Colin
Craig that if elected I will represent Napier and if that means crossing the floor to do so then that is what I will do.
