New series of videos aimed at disengaged youth
Press Release: Poor Sailors Arts Collective
From the people who brought you 'NZ Idle' (NZ's favourite web series about an artist on the dole) comes a new series about election time: Choice Lolz.
Poor Sailors wanted to create a series that provided a catalyst for young people who were disengaged from politics. "Pro-voting messages can be kinda like a smooch from your great aunty at Christmas, nice, well-intentioned but certainly not arousing. These videos are more like a cheeky pash behind the bike-sheds” says director Linsell Richards, “they come as a bit of a surprise, are over pretty quick, but ideally leave you wanting to know more”.
The group are worried that many campaigns do not explicitly target those most at risk of non-voting. "The shape shifting orange man, for example, doesn’t really talk or look like anyone we know. He’s a trier but he’s pretty hard to warm to, let alone identify with".
Choice Lolz is a series of three short videos to encourage young people to vote in the upcoming election. They will be released over the next three Mondays leading up to the election on www.thewireless.co.nz. The first one will be online today, Monday September 1.

Choice Lolz were written and directed by Poor Sailors Lake South and Linsell Richards. Dan Harris did the cinematography and Nick Salmon provided graphics.
The videos feature cameos by comedians Alice May Connolly, James Nokise and Eamonn Marra. The principal actors are: Frederick Pokai, Nina Dekkers, Jordan Rivers, Rose Young and Joe Dekkers. Music from Eyeliner and Suren Unka.
