Refugee Policy in Election Year
Refugee Policy in Election Year
Leading
politicians representing major political parties will be
highlighting their policies, answering questions and ebating
the issues in the lead-up to the coming election in an event
organised by RCNZ this coming Saturday in Auckland.
The present Minister of Immigration, Hon Michael Woodhouse, Hon Phil Goff, Senior Labour Spokesperson, Jan Logie for the Green Party, and Susan Cullen for the Māori Party will join special guest, Paul Power, CEO of the Refugee Council of Australia, in this important pre-election event.
Refugee issues and policy have dominated politics across the Tasman. What can New Zealand learn from the Australian experience and what would each party do if in Government? Paul Power from the Refugee Council of Australia has been at the centre of the cyclone. He recently gave a compelling report on the situation inside Manus Island and Nauru detention camps to the United Nations in Geneva. What do Australia’s policies and problems mean for New Zealand?
Boat people, asylum policy, quota refugee numbers, detention, human rights, doing our part internationally, and humanitarian resettlement are all some of the vital issues to be debated in what promises to be a stimulating and highly informative pre-election event.
