Secret Courts Shouldn't Be Defended
"I am surprised that NewsTalk ZB is defending the secrecy of the Youth court by pointing out that reporters can apply for permission to report what the judge allows" said ACT Leader Dr Jamie Whyte.
"Even in police states judges do occasionally allow reporting when it suits them. Why defend this Police State approach to court reporting in New Zealand?" said ACT leader Jamie Whyte
"The system of allowing judges to decide what can be reported has been severely criticised in Britain by the senior British family court judge and it has been conceded the system has led to injustices. Justice to be done must be seen to be done and it should not be for the judge to decide what the media can report" said Dr Whyte.
