AA welcomes additional investment in safe urban cycleways
The AA welcomes announcements today of an extra investment of $100 million to accelerate safe cycleways in urban
centres.
AA General Manager Motoring Affairs Mike Noon says this investment benefits all road users not just those who cycle,
both by making cycling safer in our urban centres as well as potentially reducing congestion.
“The AA has been concerned that many of our cycleways are currently not well joined up, which leads to dangerous pinch
points when traffic converges,” Mr Noon says.
“If we can provide good safe cycling infrastructure more people will be encouraged to cycle easing congestion and most
importantly reducing the risk of cycling crashes and injuries.”
Mr Noon says finally getting cycleways built is not easy and it will need to be well planned.
“The establishment of an Urban Cycleway Investment Panel with local and central government representatives along with
key cycling stakeholder organisations seems like a very sensible and practical way to get safe cycling infrastructure
happening in our urban centres.”
