NZEI welcomes Green Party's tax policy

NZEI welcomes Green Party's tax policy

The Green Party’s plans to invest in children and reduce the harm done by child poverty will have a big impact on educational success, says NZEI Te Riu Roa National President Judith Nowotarski.

“Teachers, principals and school support staff see the effects of poverty every day in our schools,” she says.

“This policy tackles the key issues. Poverty is the main cause of children not achieving at school and we need a government that is prepared to address the growing inequality in this country.

“While many more people are struggling financially, a number of people have done very well in this country in recent years. It is only fair that they pay their share of tax so that all children have the opportunity to succeed.

"We also welcome the Green Party’s commitment to restoring funding to early childhood education to ensure that kindergartens and centres employ 100 percent qualified teachers as well as extending the 20 hours early childhood subsidy to cover two year olds.

"These policies will be particularly beneficial to children from disadvantaged backgrounds."
