‘Dirty Politics’ Shows Absence of Moral Compass, Says Internet Party
The book Dirty Politics reveals the absence of a moral compass at the top of our democracy, says Internet Party leader Laila Harré.
She says it will take time to digest all the material in the book, which shakes the foundation of decent government.
“This is not normal political behaviour and must not be seen as such.”
Ms Harré said the Prime Minister could not avoid responsibility for the evidence presented in the book.
“The evidence presented of co-ordinated attacks including the use of Official Information damages the integrity of executive government. There is evidence of a frightening abuse of the power, information and resources that are entrusted to the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
“These resources are supposed to be used for the benefit of the people – not for attacking political opponents.
“Among the most disturbing revelations is the deliberate use of dirty politics to reduce voter turnout.”
Ms Harré said some sections of the media would also need to reflect on the way they had been used as a vehicle for a co-ordinated propaganda exercise.
“Media are an essential part of the democratic process. They need to be vigilant against becoming part of cynical campaigns to manipulate public opinion. The reporting now of the Hager revelations by the media will be a critical test of the independence of the Fourth Estate.”
