Grey Power Welcomes Labour Health Policy

Grey Power welcomes the announcement made in the Labour Party Health policy that people aged over 65 will receive free Doctor visits and pay no prescription charges.

Grey Power has advocated for this policy for several years as many elderly people who have National Superannuation as their only source of income cannot afford to pay to visit the Doctor or Dentist when they should due to unaffordability.

Failing to avail themselves of primary care ends up as secondary care in hospital which is a much greater cost to the taxpayer.

With over 50% of those who receive National Superannuation as their only source of income (married couples receive $282.26 each per week and a single person living alone receives $366.94 per week) some medical visits are unaffordable. The belief that many people have that older people can afford to pay for their care is untrue and policies like these are long overdue and would be welcomed by our members.
