Sensible Sentencing outlines changes in responsibilities

With today’s announcement that Garth McVicar will stand as candidate for the Conservative Party at this year’s election,
the Sensible Sentencing Trust has confirmed that he effectively stood aside from his leadership role as from the time he
reached that decision and advised his colleagues. He has acted as public servants must do when they become political
candidates.
National Spokesperson, Ruth Money, who has recently shared the role with Garth, today said:“Garth has made a bold personal decision to seek a Parliamentary seat with the Conservative Party for the 2014 election.
We’re very sorry to lose him. Garth has worked tirelessly over the past 13 or so years as an advocate for change to New
Zealand’s offender-friendly legal system. He hopes to achieve more change through the political process. We wish Garth
all the best for his campaign.
"As a result of his decision, Garth is stepping down as a Sensible Sentencing Trust National Spokesperson, and I will
take over that role alone. That is, effective immediately. Garth will not use SST assets or other resources. SST will
remain independent and free to work with any political party that wishes to work for the more decent and victim
protective criminal justice system we have fought for", concluded Ruth Money.
Our members and supporters have a wide range of political views. Sensible Sentencing remains strictly non- aligned
politically. From time to time SST will identify the parties which have been most effective in responding to victim
concerns, and most willing to advocate for genuine and meaningful change, such as on our
